Ask candidates to walk you through how they'd communicate a major incident to stakeholders while actively working to resolve it. Strong remote candidates will describe a structured approach: initial notification with severity and impact, regular updates at defined intervals, clear escalation criteria, and a post-incident summary. Candidates who haven't developed this discipline will describe something ad-hoc.
Remote IT professionals often manage their own work queues without direct oversight. This requires strong self-prioritization — the ability to triage competing demands and make good decisions about what to work on without constant direction from a manager.
Ask candidates to describe a time they were managing multiple competing priorities with minimal manager guidance. What criteria did they use to triage? How did they communicate their prioritization decisions? Candidates who thrive in remote environments will have clear frameworks for this. Those who struggle will describe escalating everything upward or waiting for direction.
